Pictured Water

A lake the Cree have known since time immemorial.

Missanabie takes its name from the “pictured waters” — the ochre pictographs painted on the rock faces of this river country. After generations without a land base, and a hard-won land claim under Treaty 9, the Missanabie Cree First Nation brought Ernie's beloved old camp home, renaming it for the great lake it sits on.

What you'll find is remote northern wilderness with every comfort of home: warm cottages, a working bait shop, and water in every direction.

“Human beings are part of the natural world, and not separate from it. When you stay here, you become part of our extended family.” — Missanabie Cree First Nation

The Nation

Owned & run by the Missanabie Cree.

This camp is one of the places the Missanabie Cree First Nation invested in when a century-old land claim was finally honoured. Staying here supports that work — and the promise to leave this water good enough for the next generation.
